Treasure island
A special aura permeates the coast of Jamaica. Indeed, another world seems to lie behind this island of thick, sprawling vegetation situated in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. But this aura is instantly dispelled on seeing the great mountains that once sprung from the depths to form this tropical paradise.

Overview
This island is bursting with life, not only in the form of biodiversity, but also in terms of humanity and culture. A land of exile where seemingly everyone has sought refuge, Jamaica was first colonized by the Spanish, then the British. Today, 95% of Jamaica's population is of African origin, descendants of hundreds of thousands of slaves brought here from Africa. The black population has laid down roots as deep as those of the colossal tropical trees that still prevail here.

Attractions
Montego Bay

This large, half-moon-shaped bay is fringed with some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The surrounding hills offer dazzling panoramas of the city and the bay that lie at their feet. Moreover, the plethora of tourist attractions in and around the city offers curious and self-sufficient visitors the opportunity to make countless interesting discoveries.Negril In almost all its aspects, Negril has all the warmth and charm of a small town: it is easy to cover on foot or by bike and virtually impossible to get lost in -- unless you choose to do so. Negril is first and foremost a carefree, open town with spectacular beaches and cliffs. People therefore come here to swim, sunbathe, eat and, for those so inclined, indulge in wild partying come nightfall. The South Coast Jamaica's South Coast remains, for the time being, your best chance to discover a part of the country that still retains its unspoiled, laid-back charm.Kingston The capital and chief port of Jamaica, Kingston is a major West Indian cultural, commercial and sports centre. Indeed, it is not only the cradle of reggae, but also features many high-calibre and often inexpensive cultural events, theatres, art galleries and museums. What's more, the vibrant city's restaurants are among the best on the island and offer amazing variety. Its attractions are also legion, whether it comes to its sizzling nightlife, beaches, gardens, large plantation houses or amusement park.Blue Mountains Definitely off the beaten track, the towering Blue Mountains attract a growing number of outdoor enthusiasts who come here to admire the breathtaking scenery. In fact, the Blue Mountains are a natural wonder in themselves. The steep slopes offer extraordinary landscapes, a fair share of which are only accessible on foot -- to the great delight of intrepid hikers.Port Antonio Port Antonio unreservedly merits the title of one of the world's -- and definitely Jamaica's -- most beautiful harbours. This Caribbean haven actually combines two ports, on either side of a central peninsula, at the very base of the verdant Blue Mountains. Moreover, the small town honoured with its presence exudes a nonchalant grace, like a goddess accustomed to her indescribable beauty.

Where on earth
With a total surface area of some 10,990 km² (6,825 sq mi), Jamaica is the third-largest island in the Caribbean. It lies 145 km (90 mi) south of Cuba and 160 km (100 mi) from Haiti.
