Relaxation, Archaeology and Ecotourism!
Over the last few years, the Riviera Maya, which runs along the shore of the Caribbean between Cancún and Tulum, has become a top tourism destination. Its numerous attractions will delight nature lovers, while the archaeological sites that have been opened to tourists give a fascinating glimpse of the life of the Maya before the arrival of the Spanish.
Attractions
Dozens of beautiful beaches, some edged by luxurious resorts and others by rustic cabañas, are strung along the 200-km coastline of the Riviera Maya. Offshore, the great Mayan reef, the second-longest coral system in the world, offers an otherworldly vision of the sea floor.
The ancient Mayan ruins share this magnificent landscape with modern tourist facilities built to welcome the constantly growing flood of visitors from Europe and the Americas.
Tres Rios
Located midway between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, Tres Rios is a 150-ha private ecological reserve protecting a beautiful beech and cenotes, where snorkelers can explore all the way to the sea.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is the liveliest and most touristy city on the Riviera Maya. Fans of Playa, as its nicknamed, will tell you however that despite the tourist development, it still has a certain village atmosphere. For example, strolling through town is delightful, especially on Quinta Avenida, the main pedestrian street. And of course, the beach at Playa del Carmen is simply superb!
Xcaret
Located 6 km from Playa del Carmen, Xcaret is Mexicos most visited ecotourism park. Visitors can go diving, sailing, horseback riding, and swimming with dolphins. Theres also a museum, a little zoo, an aquarium, a botanical garden, and a reconstructed Maya village.
Akumal
The 15-km beach of Akumal is bounded on one side by the sea and on the other by a long row of palm trees. The nearby resort and residential area are charming and authentic.
Xel-Há
Known as the worlds largest natural aquarium, Xel-Há offers exotic lagoons, bays and creeks naturally carved out of the fragile local limestone. Wide, clear, calm bodies of water swarm with colourful fish. The water is so clear that even those who dont want to swim can admire the marine fauna and flora from the boardwalk along the shore.
Tulum
Exploring the archeological area of Tulum is the most popular excursion for tourists visiting Cancún or the Riviera Maya. To protect the Maya ruins, visitors view the Castillo, the main attraction, from a distance. The beauty of the site more than makes up for this necessary restriction, as its location atop a sea cliff provides breathtaking views.
Cobá
Cobá is a picturesque little village 44 km west of Tulum, near the archaeological site of the same name. A silent witness to the timeless elegance of the glorious Maya period, the ancient town of Cobá rises solemnly through lush, sun-baked vegetation. The main attraction, Nohoch Mul, is the tallest pyramid in the Yucatán; its 42-m summit is reached by 120 steps.
Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Kaan
This nature preserve protects tropical forests dotted with cenotes edged with dunes and lagoons, and facing a coral reef that extends more than 100 m into the sea. Numerous Maya ruins emerge here and there from the luxuriant flora.
Going Out
Playa del Carmen hosts the largest concentration of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, many of which are concentrated around Quinta Avenida.
Where on earth
The Riviera Maya is a corridor running along the Caribbean Sea between Cancún and Tulum, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatán Peninsula. The name, which evokes the first inhabitants of the region, specifically refers to the Mexican coast between the villages of Puerto Morelos and Punta Allen, in the Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Kaan south of the village of Tulum.
