A Land of sand and sun
When mariachis sing of Mazatlán, the charm and beauty of this lively Mexican town are vividly evoked. The beaches and remarkably clear waters of this popular seaside resort are a little piece of heaven on earth.

Overview
Mazatlán is primarily known as one of the country's oldest tourist destinations and the site of one of the world's three most popular carnivals. Stretching out toward the Pacific, south of Bahía del Puerto Viejo, the old city invites visitors to stroll down narrow streets lined with 19th-cenutry architecture. The neighbourhood of Olas Altas ("high waves"), which runs alongside the bay of the same name, offers a Mexican take on la dolce vita with its colourful streets and secluded beaches.

Located some 10km north of Avenida del Mar, the Zona Dorada is the prime tourist area and the reason why Mazatlán is currently one of the most fashionable resort destinations. Restaurants, bars and luxury hotel complexes line nearly 20km of beach between historic Mazatlán and the hotel district.

The Teatro Ángela Peralta is a good example of Porfiriato architecture, a very popular style during the 19th century, when the building was constructed. It hosts a large number of cultural events and is named after Mazatlán-born singer Ángela Peralta. Completely renovated in 1992, the theatre has preserved its neoclassical decor and gladly opens its doors to visitors.

The Gothic Revival Basílica de la Purísima Concepción was built during the 19th century and dominates the historic area of Mazatlán. It is renowned for its golden altar and twin towers that face the Plaza Principal.

The small Museo Arqueológico offers an opportunity to marvel at relics from the pre-Hispanic era. Artefacts found during digs in the Sinaloa region are on display, as well as some old photographs of Mazatlán that show the city as it was in days gone by.

Two other museums located near the Museo Arqueológico are worth checking out: the Museo del Arte and the Machado Museo Casa. The former presents works by contemporary Mexican artists, while the latter proposes a trip back into the colonial past of Mazatlán, with its collection of furniture and other antiques housed in a magnificent 19th-century villa that has been completely restored.

Acuario Mazatlán is one of Mexico's largest aquariums, with approximately 250 species of fish and marine mammals featured in some 50 tanks.

Two rocky capes offer spectacular views of Bahía del Puerto Viejo and the city of Mazatlán. El Faro, which is said to be the second highest lighthouse in the world after Gibraltar's, is perched 157m above sea level, on top of the Cerro del Crestón hill. For another picture-perfect landscape, you can head to Cerro de Vigía, a cape that rises above the city and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding bays.

Each Mazatlán beach has its own specialty: Sábalo for water sports; the beaches along the maritime canal that separates the Zona Dorada and the three islands (Pájaros, Venados and Lobos) for swimming in calm waters; Cerritos, adjoining Sábalo beach, for those who wish to relax; and, finally, Los Pinos, Valentinos and Bruja for surfing: international competitions are held here every year.

Stretches of white sand bordered by restaurants with people dining under palm trees, beautiful waves for surfers and crystal-clear waters, ideal for diving... Needless to say, Isla de la Piedra, an island off the southern tip of Mazatlán, is an essential stop. This popular island is a favourite among Mexicans too, especially on weekends. You can get there by boat from Playa Sur (several daily trips are offered).

Going Out
The Plazuela Machado neighbourhood is a pleasant place to visit both day and night. The above-mentioned Teatro Ángela Peralta, the cultural heart of the city, presents a host of theatre and opera performances, as well as films and concerts, all year long. Located in the Zona Dorada, Fiesta Land teems with fashionable bars and nightclubs. Finally, the city's most popular cultural event is, obviously, Carnaval, a week of celebrations that takes place both day and night and culminates with Mardi Gras.

Where on earth
The pretty, sunny city of Mazatlán is located in the state of Sinaloa, on the central Pacific coast of Mexico, just south of the Tropic of Cancer and west of the last summits of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The city is home to some 350,000 inhabitants.
